The article ‘Internet Addiction: Too Much Time Online’ discusses the pros and cons of how much time teenagers today spend online. The average amount of time spent online is 10 hours and 45 minutes a day which is almost half the day. This shows how society now revolves around technology and the new generation will not believe a fact until Wikipedia has confirmed it. I personally believe teenagers spend too much time online. All this time cooped up in ones room, most teens don’t know how to communicate with the outside world. The article explains this could result in lower grades, increased risk of depression and lack of sleep. This also makes online addicted teens more socially awkward. Most wouldn’t think to make friends outside of ‘World of Warcraft’. Online games can also be hazardous. For example, around five of my friends are addicted to ‘Candy Crush’. At lunch instead of talking or gossiping like normal teenage girls, they pull out the iPhones and race to beat the next level. A few of my friends also stay up until 2am to finish playing the video games. Some do it without their parents knowing. This means, teens have now resorted to playing in the dark. It is proven that staring at a computer screen for a long time without any other source of light, can cause seizures. I believe teens should cut down their average time online per day to around 2 hours and maybe 3 hours on weekends. This gives enough time to watch a movie, check out regular sites and play a game for a while. Cutting down this time and being exposed to the real world can help the younger generation become a great generation in years to come.
